About KASI RC
The renowned and award-winning Shack Theatre Innovation is a pioneering concept created by South African theatre maker, artivist, actor, and academic Mandisi Dr. Disi Sindo. This initiative has established vibrant spaces where visitors and locals alike can engage in performing arts activities, participate in educational workshops, events, festivals, projects, and seminars. Conceived in response to the scarcity of creative art spaces in marginalized communities, the Shack Theatre concept was formally established in 2012.
Through this innovative platform, musicians, poets, dancers, visual artists, and theatre practitioners have found a second home at KASI RC, where both the local community and visitors can experience enrichment, healing, and upliftment through heartfelt performances. Sindo’s journey began with the successful launch of the award-winning Shack Theatre – Makukhanye Art Room. This was followed by the implementation of the KASI RC Shack Art School and Theatre, which offers authentic and natural learning experiences to the community.
Sindo has since expanded the Shack Theatre model, establishing a third venue in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape, specifically in King Williams Town, known as the Dimbaza Shack Theatre. Furthermore, Sindo continues to develop more accessible Shack Theatre spaces across South Africa. This innovation has had a profound impact, inspiring numerous young individuals within the communities to establish their own artistic spaces. The Shack Theatre model has given rise to various initiatives, including the Swellendam Shack Theatre, Azande Village, Kraai4Theatre, and several others, underscoring its significance in fostering creativity and artistic expression throughout the country.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Our objectives are to develop skills in theatre, music, dance, and visual arts, while fostering entrepreneurship, confidence, and social transformation through creativity:

To make theatre accessible to the communities and the artists in need in the townships and rural areas.

To create a safe space for the youth coming from the marginalized communities and rural areas.

To use arts and culture activities as means of telling the stories of the communities to an inclusive and diverse audience, and also as a tool to empower our peers and fellow artists.

To provide a space for mentorship programmes, artistic consultations, workshops, events, festivals and other cultural events.

To heal and console communes through theatre, arts and culture.

 To creating a home for the next generations where their art will be practiced & communes healed, Inspired and informed.

To give learning, training and constant support to the youth of South Africa by creating opportunities.
