Born in the Arts

At Soweto Theatre Week, the late, celebrated theatre maker Bongani Linda’s daughter took the stage to honour her father. She chose poetry.
Live, unflinching, and masterful, she offered gratitude and memory in equal measure. You could hear the teacher in her diction, the artist in her timing, the daddy’s daughter in every line. It was not just a performance. It was inheritance made audible.
If you are born in the arts, you stay an artist. The stage recognizes its own.
And today, that lineage continues. Since sunrise, artists in Soweto have been gathered at Uncle Toms Community Hall, waiting for the day’s programme to begin. The work goes on. The circle holds.
